Although we attribute the writing of the expeditions journals to Quill Pens, pencils were available in the era but weren’t the main method of writing for the expedition for want of something more permanent.

Graphite was originally discovered in the 1500’s, and by 1560 the first pencils, graphite wrapped in string or inserted into a wood tube, were coming into use.
