The design and sculptured models used to produce this keepsake were created by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., a former U.S. mint sculptor/engraver. This medal was struck in brass, and gold plated. The background was polished and the images frosted to achieve a rich silhouetted effect. The obverse design is Fort Clatsop and the surrounding trees that shroud and protect it from the relentless coastal weather. The reverse design is a map of the new Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks and includes the names and location of all the individual National and State sites that come together to form it. William Clark’s compass bearing marks the direction.
