Cedar was very important to the Clatsop people. They used it for their plank houses, clothing, baskets, harpoons, and nets to name just a few of the many items made from this "tree of life". Among the many journal entries about the Clatsop, the captains wrote about the skill in which they constructed and handled their canoes. Lewis and Clark named the fort, "Fort Clatsop" in honor of the local Clatsop Indian tribe. This popular poster is part of the graphics unifying the areas of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. The park is located in the homeland of the Clatsop and Chinook tribes.
