Located on the north side of the Columbia River, the area now known as Fort Columbia State Park was home for thousands of years to the Chinooks and the famed Chief Concomly. Near the area known as Station Camp to the members of the Corps of Discovery, this high point of land was the area which men from the expedition passed over on their way to Cape Disappointment and then on to the Pacific Ocean. Early settlers saw the value of this site for its harbor defense capabilities and created a military site that defended the Columbia River from 1896 to 1947.
