Sacagawea, wife of Toussaint Charbonneau, and their infant son accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She helped establish cultural contacts with Native American populations, especially with her people the Shoshoni. Her name was given to her by the Hidatsa people with whom she lived in her late childhood years. The name is a compound of two common Hidatsa nouns, cagáàga [tsakáàka] 'bird' and míà [míà] 'woman'.
